It's all just a bunch of Hocus Pocus!

It's no secret that I love Halloween; it's one if my favorite holidays! I love candy, dressing up in ridiculous costumes, and everything macabre! 

One of my favorite things to do around this time of year is to snuggle up on the couch and watch creepy movies.  While these movies are not necessarily halloween-themed, they'll definitely get you in the spooky mood.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Is it Christmas? Is is Halloween? I don't know, but it's certainly creepy! My kids are simultaneously terrified of and in love with this movie. 

2. The Dark Crystal

It's Jim Henson at his finest, folks. Large, intricate puppets, fantastical storyline, and some of the straight-up scariest dudes ever, the Skeksis. The disrobing of Camberlain seriously affected me as a kid.

3.  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This is probably the most Halloween-y of the Harry Potter films. The Hogwarts choir singing a Macbeth inspired song gets me every time! Awesome!

4. Labrynth

David Bowie has never been dreamier, in my opinion. 

5. Hocus Pocus

What Halloween movie list would be complete without Hocus Pocus? This is obviously the best of the bunch, with star actors, hilarious one-liners, and the creepiest zombie ever. Seriously, Billy Butcherson gave me nightmares for at least 3 years. 

Frozen

The other night, we took the girls to see the new Disney movie out right now, Frozen. They loved it! This was actually the first movie that has ever held Margot's attention from more than 40 minutes; she sat through the entire thing!

We really enjoyed it too. The story was cute and had a great message, and the music was a lot of fun!

I've been humming this song ever since, and you can't get much better than Idina Menzel! 

I think Santa might be bringing this one for Christmas.

Guys. Let's talk Harry Potter.
You may or may not know that I am a super fan. I own and have read every book, including Tales of Beedle the Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Today I read an article, announcing that J. K. Rowling has signed on with Warner Brothers to write a new movie set in the Harry Potter universe. It's going to be Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, starring Newt Scamander! It's set 70 years before Harry's lifetime, but it's still the wizarding world. AND, it starts in New York!
American wizards! EEP!

What's with today, today?

What an awesome day!

This morning, Brandon and I got up early and went to donate plasma. With both of us donating, we made about $100! Woot!

After grabbing a burger, we went home and took a nap. Oh yeah, baby! 

After waking up, we took the girl to go see Monsters University. It was really good! I laughed out loud several times, and the babies loved it!

After the movie, we went to a park for an hour or so, until Portia and Margot were too sweaty to handle life anymore.

So we returned home, filled up the kiddie pool, and played in the yard for the rest of the evening. 

Just close to bedtime, we set up the fire put, and roasted polish dogs and made s'mores. There's just something about sitting under the summertime stars and eating and talking. It's glorious.

We put the babies to bed, and happened to find Empire Records on tv, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Comfort Movies

There are certain movies that I watch for a pick-me-up. You know, kinda like comfort food! I've seen these films probably 100 times each, but I love them. 

What's that? You want me to tell you what they are? 

I knew you would.

Here you go! In no particular order, here's my list of the best movies to curl up on the couch to on a Friday night with an entire pint of ice cream.

1. Only You 

LOVE this one! Marisa Tomei sprinting through an airport in a giant wedding dress, wandering all over Italy in search of her soul mate, with Bonnie Hunt in tow! And you can't go wrong with a very young, very charming Robert Downey Jr.

2. Pride and Prejudice

The BBC version, all 6 hours. Don't get me wrong, I love the new one, but Colin Firth trumps every other Darcey ever.

This movie is romantic, funny, and will make your husband run from the room before you can say "Mr. Bennett!!"

Glorious.

3. Anne of Green Gables

The story of a young orphan redhead (no, not Annie). It's wonderful. There are so many memorable moments from this film, Here's a few for you to enjoy:

4. Beauty and the Beast

My Carrie-sister LOVED this movie as kids. We watched it  every time we were sick, and really thought it made us feel better. We watched it so often, our mom hid it for a year. On another note, the Beast in human form is by far the studliest of Disney princes.

5. Pretty in Pink

The Brat Pack at it's finest. Jon Cryer is a genius.

If you've never seen it, go now. Rent it, buy it, call me and I'll lend it to you.

6. Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves

Oh, Kevin Costner. How I loved you. Seriously though, this movie is cheesy and dramatic, but it has an all-star cast. Along with Kevin, we have Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and a Bryan Adams song that's practically a main character.

7. Newsies

I never get tired of Christian Bale, and I especially never get tired of Christian Bale singing and dancing with 50 other attractive young men. 

8. About a Boy

This movie is wonderul. It's hilarious and heartfelt, and really makes you love Hugh Grant. 

9. A Midsummer Night's Dream

This is the movie version of my favorite Shakespeare play, with another all-star cast. We've got Kevin Kline, Rupert Everett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart, and Christian Bale. It's epidomy of a love triangle, it's witty, and I love it.

10. Breakfast at Tiffany's 

Ah, Breakfast at Tiffany's. In my opinion,  the best role of Audrey Hepburn's career. She's innocent and quirky in one moment, and heartbrakingly sad in the next. And she's believable from the opening scene, donned in pearls and an evening gown eating donuts in front of Tiffany's, to the last, searching for a lost cat in the pooring rain.

Over the weekend, we saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's hilarious. I laughed till I cried more than once.

And the also nice thing is that it's clean humor. Nothing that would be awkward if you were watching this with your 4-year-old nephew or 98-year-old Grandmother.

It's one that I will definitely be purchasing.

one time, in harry potter...

Brandon and I have recently started re-watching the Harry Potter movies in order. Its awesome. Maybe we're nerds. But if liking Harry Potter is nerdy, then I don't want to be cool.

I really do love Harry. I have even been borderline obsessive about Harry. Yes, I have read all the books. Yes, I have read them all more than once. Yes, I waited in line at midnight for most of the books. Maybe I dressed up and brought a fake wand. Yes, I cried when Sirius passed through that archway. Yes, I have had many a deep, philosophical discussion about who R.A.B. may be. Yes, I have often thought about which house I would be placed into. Yes, I read the 7th installment in one night.

But do you blame me? What kid didn't dream about magic growing up? Who wouldn't want to have a pet owl? And who doesn't love the quintessential good vs. evil battle, where love, friendship, and loyalty conquer in the end?

Yes, I love Harry.

Maybe it's my appreciation for young-adult fiction, or my love for the macabre, or maybe I can just relate because of my pasty whiteness, but I love the Twilight series.

Well, I love the books. The movies are fun because I love the books.

Here's my problem with the movies: Kristin Stewart and Rob Pattinson. Kristin looks like she's constipated and Rob looks like he's about to cry. All the time.

Plus, as much as I love the ever-so-cheesy, tortured-lovers-destined-to-be-together storyline, it's kinda laughable on film. Like the awkward moaning/kissing scene in New Moon. Oh jeez.

But, even though I have my qualms, this Saturday night you will find me in line at midnight to see Eclipse. And I will probably giggle, and maybe even sigh, more than once.

Yesterday I bought the movie Thumbelina. This one:

You know, where the chickens sing "thumbelinaaaaaaaa" and Charro is a frog:

Yeah, that one.

Tonight I watched the movie "City of Angels" for the first time. If you've never seen it, and want to, don't read this.
So Nicholas Cage is a guardian angel, and he falls in love with Meg Ryan, a surgeon. He finds out how to show himself to her and communicate with her, but he can't feel her when they touch and he can't be in a real relationship with her. Because their lives are so different, she tells him that she can't see him anymore. She has to move on with her life without him. So he opts to throw away his angelic life and duties, and become mortal. They finally get together, and one day later, Meg Ryan gets hit by a bus and dies. The End.
Really? She dies? Could this movie have ended any worse? They couldn't have just lived happily ever after like any other romantic drama? I was thoroughly disappointed. If you want a tearjerking romantic movie, pick The Notebook.
